It all began with Twice in 1993

While walking through Marquês de Pombal, in Lisbon, Milu came across a tiny two-month-old puppy in a critical condition. She named her Twice. She was the first animal Milu rescued in Portugal and the one who changed her life forever.

Our Journey

1993–2006

One Animal at a Time

Over the years, Milu could never turn her back on an abandoned, injured or neglected animal. With every rescue, the dream of creating a safe haven for those in need grew stronger.

February 2007

The Dream Found a Home

The first piece of land dedicated exclusively to rescued dogs was purchased, turning a long-held dream into reality. O Cantinho da Milu was finally beginning to take shape.

April 2011

The Association Is Officially Founded

O Cantinho da Milu was officially established as a non-profit animal welfare association.

2012–2025

A Shelter That Never Stopped Growing

New enclosures, covered shelters, quarantine units, maternity areas, the planting of dozens of trees, dedicated volunteers, foster families and thousands of successful adoptions helped the project grow year after year.

More than 12,000 animals have passed through O Cantinho da Milu

Each given a second chance.

Today

The Mission Continues

Today, hundreds of dogs and cats still depend on us every single day.
And as long as there is an animal in need, our mission will continue.
